How To Take Better Photos

Continuing this week's vacation theme, today's how-to is about something that, for me, is a HUGE part of traveling: Taking Pictures!
I take tons of photos when I travel and the more I've learned, the better my shots have gotten! In my opinion there are three major steps to taking the best pictures you can: Master the Manual setting on your camera, Look Around You, and HAVE FUN!
First: Master Manual
This first step is by far the most difficult of what I'm talking about, but also one of the most rewarding. The manual setting on your camera can be your best friend or your worst enemy. If you don't know how to use it, you can get a bunch of awful shots. But if you conquer it, it will take your pictures to a whole new level. Most cameras have a manual setting, even point & shoot ones. (If you're looking into buying a new camera, I can't recommend Canon highly enough. Even their simple powershot is Bomb!) To shoot in manual there are 3 basic things you need to know:
SHUTTER SPEED: Shutter Speed is pretty easy - it is how fast or slow the shutter closes when you press the button. The faster the shutter speed, the better the camera will freeze the action. Along with the other settings, shutter speed also effects the amount of light that hits the sensor. The faster the shutter speed, the less light comes into the camera. So if it's dark out and your subjects are still, slow down the shutter speed, and if it's bright with fast motion, vise versa.
ISO: ISO is the sensitivity to light. The higher the ISO speed, the more light your camera's sensor can pick up. For example, if your ISO is set to 1600, you can get a much better exposed shot at night or in a dark area than you could if it was at 400. I generally have my ISO at the highest setting on my camera (1600), but a general good rule of thumb is to have it at about 200-400 outdoors and 400+ indoors or at nighttime. Having it at the highest setting can sometimes downgrade the ultimate image quality.
APERTURE/F STOP: Aperture is basically an adjustable opening in the lens that controls the amount of light that gets let in to the camera. One of the confusing things about this is that it is measured in F stops that have the larger opening correlating with a smaller number, and smaller openings matched with bigger numbers. Also, aperture deals with your depth of field which is super important. Since its one of the more confusing elements, if you wanna learn more, here's a little article that might help.
The most important thing about these tips is: PRACTICE!
The more you practice, the easier it is, and the cooler your shots will be!
AND - Here are 7 Beginner Photography Tutorials to help you out!

Second: Look Around You!
This may seem like an obvious one, but sometimes, especially if you're on a schedule or looking at a map, you can forget to really take in everything around you! Look up and see what kinds of cool skylines there are! Look down and see flowers or street art on the sidewalks! You might be surprised at all the things you'll find!

Third: Have Fun!
Have a blast with your shots! Take candids, don't be afraid to take as many as you want, go for a huge variety! Think about unique framing - take one picture 3 different ways. Be in the moment! Seize opportunity! One of my favorite pictures is one of my best friend and I in front of a wall of Warhol paintings in an exhibit. We were stopped by the guards immediately after taking it, but we got the shot!
Think outside the box and keep in mind that these are your memories! Make them your own!

Travel Journal

Going on trips is such a wonderful time to experience new things and to create memories. Sometimes, though, if you're really busy on a vacation, it can be hard to fully remember and appreciate all the things you've done and tried. Today's craft is making a travel journal to use on your excursions and commemorate all of your exciting adventures!
Materials:
- 2 pieces of thin cardboard large enough to be the front & back covers of your book
-Assortment of Paper (it can be anything from lined notebook paper to multi-colored scrapbooking paper to normal white computer paper!)
- Assortment of a couple Envelopes
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Hole Punch
- 3 loose binder rings (can snag at office depot)
*OR to make it easier, you can buy a pre-made journal, then decorate it however you want and paste envelopes in the front and back!

*Materials To Bring On Your Trip:
- Glue Stick
- Scotch Tape
- Scissors
- Pens/Pencils/Markers
*Optional: A loose envelope to keep in your day bag to put mementos in throughout each day

How To Make It:
1. Cut the 2 pieces of cardboard down to the size you want for the covers
2. Cut down as many sheets of paper as you want to fit inside the journal. They can be different sizes as long as they line up ok for the holes
3. Line up Cardboard, Envelopes (space these as far apart as you want), and paper, and punch 3 Holes in them
4. Put Binder rings through holes to hold together
5. Decorate your covers!
Now for the really fun part - Take it on your trip with you! Collect things as you go, take a bunch of pictures, and make as much of your journal as you can! Fill it with anything and everything you want! Ticket Stubs, Photos, Drawings, Quotes, Musings, Funny Incidents, Maps, Luggage Tags, Room Keys, Post Cards, Stamps, Matchbook Covers, Napkins, anything!
In the end you will be so happy to have such a composite memory of your trip!

Wanderlust

Going on trips is one of my favorite things in life. I am prone to wanderlust and find myself daydreaming on a day to day basis of exciting excursions to foreign lands, road trips across the country, cruises abroad. I love everything from Disneyland over-nights to month-long European getaways. Get me a plane ticket, and I'm there.
I'm not necessarily the backpacking type- I like my cute outfit options and comfy private rooms, but for the most part, if it means travel, I'm down. I am SO excited to be on vacation right now, experiencing a cornucopia of new things! The food, the art, the people, the places! I'm so excited just thinking about it my hands can't type fast enough!
There are three components to enjoying an experience: anticipating, experiencing and remembering. I love all of them. I love planning for a trip - getting guidebooks, looking on websites, contacting people. I love making itineraries. I love scrapping itineraries. Wandering, roaming, getting lost. Visiting places I've read about or dreamt of. Experiencing something you've been looking forward to and planning is so rewarding, and having the memory of a fun trip is something you carry with you forever. To enhance my memories, I love making scrapbooks and keeping travel journals, keeping any and every ticket stub, taking TONS of pictures.
I think travel is one of the most important things one can do for the soul. It exposes you to a world beyond your own. Getting out of your comfort zone can put you in a new zone you didn't know existed. Travel reminds me that anything is possible, and that the world is full of limitless possibilities. Even if you can't get away for long, try taking a little trip as often as you can. - Disappear into a far away place in a book, go site-seeing in your own town. Feed your own wanderlust in little ways. Live every day like you're on vacation!

On The Road

Hello All!
This week Tarreyn Land is goin on the road, and you're joining along! I am taking a trip to the East Coast for 9 days and the blog is coming with! Through next Wednesday, a majority of the posts will be vacation/travel related! Today's Buzz is a bunch of entertainment things that relate to travel!
Few duos in history compare to the amazing camaraderie of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby! Their series of On The Road movies remain charming and hilarious today! My personal favorite is Road To Morocco, but they're all great!

More Good Travel Movies:
Lost in Translation
Into The Wild
Roman Holiday
Up
The Darjeeling Limited
The Motorcycle Diaries
Roman Holiday

Some Great Books about Travel:
- On The Road OR The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac: The epitomal beat novelist, Kerouac's stream-of-consciousness writing defined an era and will make you wanna grab a nap-sack and hit the road!
-Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne: This was one of my favorites as a kid, and still a great read today!
- For Whom The Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway: I am personally not a huge Hemingway fan, but he's definitely worth reading and an unquestionably adept author.
- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson: This can be a difficult read due to the MASSIVE amounts of hallucinogens the author was on, but it is an interesting look into a  unique style of writing, and is a wild ride about a crazy weekend.
- Travels With Charley: In search of America by John Steinbeck: This is a book by Steinbeck that I haven't read personally, but his writing is so lovely and this comes very highly recommended, it's sure to be good.

Dive in to these if you're in the mood for a little taste of a trip or vacation!

How To Make Gourmet Burgers!

I don't know about you guys, but I love Love LOVE hamburgers! There are few cravings that are quite as satisfying to fulfill than a delicious juicy burger. However, sometimes making them at home can feel a little less than gourmet. Today's How-To is part of my quest to provide you all with some stellar burger recipes I have acquired, along with some tips on ingredients and condiments to step things up a notch. Pretty much all of these can also be made with turkey, OR if you're a vegetarian, here is a great list of some veggie burger options!
Mark's Mega Burger
My buddy Mark makes one of the best burgers ever! He generously donated his recipe to help my cause. These burgers are seasoned deliciously - even when cooked they might look a little red on the outside, but bite in and you'll see that they're done. And SO TASTY!

2. Split buns and spread each half with the meat mixture and season with salt and pepper.
3. Broil pen faced 3 inches from heat for 8 to 10 minutes or until meat mixture reaches desired degree of doneness.

Herb Burger
Ingredients:
- 1 lb Ground Beef

- 1/2 Cup Bread Crumbs
- 1 Egg
- 2 tbsp. Lemon Juice
- 2 tbsp. Fresh Basil, Chopped

Cool Condiments
Of course you've got your basic ketchup, mustard and mayo, but here are some condiments for your consideration
- Thousand Island Dressing
- Aioli (There are also some Super great chipotle aioli recipes for added spice)
- BBQ Sauce
- Guacamole
- Pesto

Top Notch Toppings
Other than pickles, lettuce, onion & tomato, here are some kicker toppings that really gourmet-ify your meal!
- Avocado
- Roasted Peppers
- Fancy Cheeses (Some of my favorites are goat cheese, blue cheese & manchego)
- Caramelized Onions
- Bacon
- Sub in Butter Lettuce for Romaine (its my fav!)
- Sauteed Mushrooms
And about anything tasty you can think of!

Stellar Sides
- French Fries. Obviously. BUT here are some ways to spice up the traditional burger sidekick:
Truffle Fries
Seasoned Fries (salt/pepper, garlic salt, onion salt, paprika)
Sweet Potato Fries,
- Onion Rings
- Grilled Veggies! Asparagus, Zucchini, Squash, Tomatoes, Brusselsprouts,
*Beer! Who can resist an ice cold beer along the side?! I did a little research to find out which kinds of beers pair up best with burgers! Here are some of my personal favorites:
Sierra Nevada or Drifter, Newcastle, Blue Moon, Sam Adams, Stella Artois, 1554
* The bun can make or break your burger! I favor brioche buns which are so tasty! Kaiser rolls, Poppyseed Buns, Baguettes or even English Muffins depending on your mood! The real key is to grill the buns so they're nice and toasty. Also think about brushing on some butter.
* One more tip: If these recipes make way more burgers than you need, you can freeze the extra patties and cook them later in the week! Just put wax paper or freezer paper between the patties so they don't stick together!
Eat, Drink and be Merry!

- Wire Mesh/ Window Screen big enough to fill frame window(You can find it at a hardware store)
- Piece of fabric of your choice - choose a fun one! Lace, stripes, print!

Try Something New

That's it. Sometime today, or tomorrow, or this weekend, try something you haven't done before. Go Salsa Dancing. See a black & white movie on the big screen. Eat a strange food. Pop into that little boutique you've always been curious about. Do Power Yoga. Try a new cocktail. You may not be crazy about it, but trying new things is proven to be good for you.
Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

The Rise and Fall of Romantic Comedies

Happy Valentine's Day! Today's topic is something very near and dear to my heart. - Romantic Comedies.
           I. LOVE. Romantic Comedies. I don't mind if they're predictable, I could care less if you have to totally suspend your disbelief or if they're super sappy. I DO care, however, if they aren't good. I care if the characters aren't well drawn, if they're trying too hard or if the wit is lacking. Unfortunately, these features are becoming extremely present more and more these days. As much as I hate to admit it, we are currently in a romantic comedy depression.
Liking to think of myself as an aficionado, an extreme romantic comedy expert, I have delineated here a thorough history about the ebbs and flows, peaks and valleys, of the Romantic Comedy Genre.
Widely noted as the first really great romantic comedy, Charlie Chaplin's The Tramp from 1915 paved the way for a genre that would not only help define popular culture, but my adolescence. After the Tramp fell in love, rom coms (note: I actually really dislike the rom. com abbreviation and would never say it in person, but for the sake of ease for this article bear with me..) took about another 15/20 years to develop into a fully gestated thing of beauty. The 1930s brought on some sweet and wonderful stuff like the Andy Hardy Movies, It Happened One Night, and Fred & Ginger, but the genre flourished even further in the 1940s and 50s.
With brilliant wit, unbeatable pairs, supremely drawn farcical situations, singing and dancing, slapstick and perfect chemistry, romantic comedies became a fully gestated thing of beauty. Stars took to the silver screen who embodied everything that a movie star should be. Style, class, terrific timing, they had it all. Stars like Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, (Who all team up for a stunning collaboration in one of my favorites The Philadelphia Storystarted popping up like wildflowers. Through the cheesecloth covered lenses, we began to fall in love with a genre all about falling in love.
In the 1950s everything that was awesome in the 30s and 40s got even more interesting because there started being more dimension in terms of subject matter. The studios' control was loosening and some really neat stuff started to happen. My prime example of this is Billy Wilder. Brilliant, amazing Billy Wilder. I could write for days about Some Like it Hot alone. But on top of that you have The Apartment, Irma LaDouce, Sabrina, The Seven Year Itch, Ninotchka, and Kiss Me, Stupid?!?! Seriously?! Genius. And that's only talking about his romantic comedies! If you don't know his work, look him up. You will NOT be disappointed.
Then the 1960s hit, and the beloved couples and farsical situations took a nose dive. With the exception of a couple Elvis movies, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and The Apartment, to name a few, the 60s were not power-packed with great romantic comedies. With a stronger focus on experimentation, and the development of new wave and other styles, romantic comedies fell to the wayside.
The 70's weren't much better. In the late 1970s when Woody Allen became comedy king, more offbeat kinds of love stories like Annie Hall started to emerge, which began to get the ball rolling again.
In the 1980s the hair was big and the romance bigger. While not having quite the perfection of the black and whites, there was still some new tubular stuff, including the avalanche of teen romantic comedies. With the domination of the Brat Pack, classics such as Pretty in Pink, 16 Candles, and Say Anything swept the country. This got even better over the next 15 years with stuff like 10 Things I Hate About You, Clueless, Can't Hardly Wait, and Empire Records (to name a few). The 80s also perpetuated the more offbeat characters that started in the 70s. Comedians like Billy Crystal and Steve Martin were suddenly leading men, and doors were opening for lots of different kinds of ingredients.
And then there were the 90s. Aaahh the 90s. The age of Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Meg Ryan, Hugh Grant, and the whole gaggle of rom com superstars. I like to think of the 90s as a romantic comedy renaissance. Lovable sidekicks, comical situations, wistful ingenues, sweeping romance, it all was back! Sleepless in Seattle, My Best Friend's Wedding, You've Got Mail, Runaway Bride, Blast From The Past, One Fine Day, Only You, over 280 Romantic Comedies are listed on Wikipedia's 1990s Rom Com list, and I just can't get enough. Thank you, 90s.
The 90s also gave way to a new British invasion - Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bridgitte Jones' Diary, About a Boy, Notting Hill all came out and I LOVE them all! The Americans and the Brits formed a beautiful symbiotic relationship over the issue of Rom Coms, and it is one that benefited ALL of us...
In my personal opinion, the final truly great romantic comedy that bookeneded this era was Love Actually in 2003. Movies bobbed along the waves for a while with blips like 13 Going On 30, The Holiday, and Garden State. But around 2008 things went from bad to worse. Not to say that there aren't good ones still coming out every now and then. And believe me - i see them ALL. I sat through the entirety of Accidental Husband. There's the occasional good one, I thought Crazy Stupid Love was super cute, and some stuff coming from the Judd Apatow camp like Forgetting Sarah Marshal and Knocked Up are great, but overall, the genre is suffering a drought.
But, I have faith that it will bounce back. It always does. Over the next 10 years there will be a return to the delectable romances we all love. But until then, we have the greats to turn to. Netflix will be the supplier for my addiction. I hope you have an excellent Valentine's Day and that your life is filled with true romance!
