My Guide to Being Sick

I am sick.
Not in the Beautiful Mind way (outdated reference?), but more in the achey, wheezy,  snot-faucet way.
I've been awake for approximately four hours and in bed for three hours and 51 minutes. (Those nine minutes were spent making tea and eating a brownie while sitting on my kitchen floor.)

(Bet you didn't even KNOW I could look this attractive, did you?)

So as I lay here in my misery, I decided to impart the (questionable) wisdom I've gained from being sick over the years.

Step 1: Have your local Thai Restaurant on Speed Dial
- Tom Yum soup basically cures all, and is the only thing that is acceptable to eat when in this state of misery. (But as long as you're getting out of bed to go get it, might as well throw in some fried rice while you're at it. And maybe some Spring Rolls.)

Step 2: Catch up on shitty TV
- You're sick! Now is your chance to watch Vampire Diaries and The Bachelor with no one judging you! RUN to your television! (Or crawl. Or just stay in bed & watch it on your computer.)

Step 3: Splurge on Kleenex
- There are 3 things in life to never buy cheap: Tequila, Razors and Kleenex.
Get the kleenex with the aloe and lotion in them! Your nostrils and general sense of well-being will thank you.
(I would also advice you to never go cheap on bikini waxing, Sushi or mattresses, but those are tales for another time.)

Step 4: Know that Beer does not Count as a Fluid
- As much as it pains me to admit it, booze is not proper Flu-Juice. Which totally blows because you're already miserable, you might as well get drunk, but -This is the one time I'll tell you not to drink alcohol. Stick with hot tea and water. (But I suppose you can throw a little Jameson into your tea if you want.)

Step 5: Bathe
- I know you feel like shit, and don't want to move, but the hottest of hot showers will make everything better.
Plus, let's be honest, you probably smell.

Step 6: Paint your nails
- You feel disgusting, and truthfully, you probably look the same (see above photo) AND you're laying in bed doing nothing - with no sense of smell. What better thing to do than paint your nails? It will kill some time and make you feel somewhat more attractive.

Step 7: Break out the boyfriend jeans
- Ideally you don't have to go anywhere, but if you do, it's time to break out the boyfriend jeans. And boyfriend Hanes tees. This shall be your uniform. (Even in sickness I won't wear sweatpants in public.)
This is your time to scrub it up. Enjoy.

Step 8: Find Silver Linings
- This is probably your most important step. Being sick blows. And I fully allow you a standard amount of wallowing. BUT - keep things in perspective.
Sure it sucks that you have no appetite and have been existing on nothing but tea and soup, but think about how it's balancing out the fact that you didn't run this morning!
And of course you wish you were feeling better but at least you're not that poor whale in Blackfish!
THERE'S SO MUCH TO BE GRATEFUL FOR!!!

Follow these steps and I can guarantee (but not really) that you will feel better!
And if it gets really bad, just add more whiskey to that tea and veg out in front of Scandal. Good Luck!

Tarreyn Land Coachella Guide: Fashion

Coachella is almost here!
The first weekend is over, but I'm heading out Thursday and I'm so excited!!!
Not only Coachella is going on, but all the spring and summer music and arts festivals are upon us! (Jealous of any of you who attended SXSW!)
Throughout all my planning and research I've come across some pretty cool stuff in all departments (Check back for more guides later!), but of course the fashion element has been my favorite part.
I thought I'd compile a guide of Festival Fashion for you to check out. Even if your only plans for the summer are to get down to the pool, there's something here for everyone.

1. Cut-off Shorts (just bought my first pair!), Along with a Fun Type of Short
2. Flowy Sun Dresses to stay cool and cool ABCD
3. A Maxi Dress is a necessity
4. Light Weight Tops, Tanks & Crop Tops - Anything with lace, fringe or prints A, B, C
5. Billowy Skirts or Pants
6. For when it gets cold The Perfect Denim Jacket (on sale now!)
7. For layering and fun, snag a lace or printed bandeau top!

*I'm planning to stay away from Rompers due to the port-a-potty situation, but that's your call

As we all know, it's not considered an outfit without Accessories.
And a lot of the things to bring to a festival need to be both fashionable and functional. Check out these must-haves to amp up your look and help enjoy your experience
1.  Close-Toed Shoes to avoid getting stomped on (I'm taking my Classic Chucks, but Coveting these ballerina ones!)
2. A HAT! - Try a Panama or a Wide Brim Flattop  and I'm loving this Floral Snapback (Think I need to try to make one of these!)
3. The Perfect Sunnies (Check in here next week for an embellished Sunnies DIY!) ABC
4. OF COURSE you need a flower Crown!!! (DUH!) Try Some of these ABor READ HERE to make your own!
5. Layered Dainty Jewelry like This LocketWishbone and Feather
6. A Sports Camera! Not only are DSLR's not allowed, but with all the Bumping, Spilled Drinks, Unpredictable weather, and more, this is the camera I'm bringing to capture the fun and mayhem. (It also does video!)
7. To dress it up a bit at night, I've got my eye on these Platform Jelly Sandals
8. It's the return of the Fanny Pack! One of these will keep your belongings safe and out of the way. (I got a vintage 80's skiing one, but American Apparel has every color imaginable!)
9. Stackable Bracelets to go with your Wristband are a must
10. Fanny Pack not your style? Find a small, fun statement shoulder bag
11. And VERY important: Stay Hydrated and keep it light with this fun Collapsible Water Bottle

Are you guys going to any spring festivals?
What fashion must-haves are you bringing??

30 Skills to have by 30

Thirty is coming.
Not for another couple years for me, but it's still lingering out there.
I've made the decision to embrace it, and am choosing to use the milestone as a source of inspiration.
And while I'm excited to learn and grow, I realized that there's quite a few things we should know before hitting the big 3-0.
So I compiled a little list.
(Let me tell you right now I've only got about half [maybe] of these down.)

1. How to Sew a Button
Guys.
First off, buttons are incredibly easy to sew - trust me. Secondly, they will ALWAYS fall off at inconvenient times, and you might not always have mom/girlfriend/butler around in the moment to help you. Do yourself a favor and learn how to sew your own buttons

2. How to Open a Bottle of Champagne

Under my mother's roof, this is a skill learned before it was legal for me to even drink it. PLUS, you can impress all your friends when you are the gal or guy who always shows up with a bottle of bubbles and opens it cooly (and safely - ALWAYS point away from people!) Watch a tutorial HERE

3. How to Cook 2 great dishes for every meal.
French Toast, BLT's and Spaghetti and Meatballs are all some of mine.
Impressive, I know.

4. How to Say No
I don't know about you guys, but I have a real tendency to immediately accept every task/event/favor I'm asked about, and then find myself over-booked and lamenting it.
I also have a compulsion to please people around me and get scared to say no, or put my foot down. I try to avoid confrontation at all times.
But sometimes you need to be ok buckling down and knowing when and how to turn people  down.

5.
Teach Yourself A Skill Using Youtube
In 2014, we can teach ourselves how to do basically anything. If you can dream it, you can YouTube it.

6. How to Properly hold a Baby
If you're getting close to 30, it's happening: Your friends are starting to have babies.
I know, it sounds crazy to me too, but it's for real and that train is NOT stopping for a while. Know how to take a little one off your friends' hands for a while so they can enjoy a conversation (or cocktail) for 5 sacred minutes. Trust me, they'll love you forever.
Plus - holding babies is good for the soul.

7. How to make your favorite Cocktail(s)

Impress your guests, and treat yourself when you want to be fancy (and drunk.)
Bonus points for knowing how to pick decent wine.

8. When to bite your tongue

As important as it is to know when and how to say the right thing, it's often even more important to know when to shut the fuck up.
I struggle with this on a daily hourly basis.

9. How to Tie a Tie (Men) or Apply Liquid Liner (Women)

Guys and gals - be classy and prepared by knowing how to do these staples.
Bonus points for girls who can do both. And walk in heels.

10. How to Parallel Park
While we all have our Austin Powers moments in sticky parking situations, parallel parking is an invaluable skill to have, especially in bigger cities.

11. The Ability to Run a Mile

Even if it's just in case of emergency. (Jabberjays, Fire Wall, Chasing after George Clooney... or pizza...)

12. How to Prepare for a Job Interview

1. Be confident and properly dressed.
2. Present a properly formatted resume.
3. Un-Tag all Facebook pictures from Spring Break 2009.
4. DO NOT ask a question about the kid in the picture on the interviewer's desk. (Hint - their son is actually a daughter.)

13. Have a Go-To Karaoke Song

I almost never do Karaoke, and when I do it's after an ungodly amount of tequila shots, so I may not be the best person to address this.
BUT - when I DO take the mic, I know that I will be singing either Tom Jones, Neil Diamond or Britney Spears.
Find your song so that when the Cuervo is fogging up your head you don't have to waste valuable brain power on picking a song in that giant book.

14.
How to Give A Good Toast
Your late 20's is the dawn of the weddings, people. Trust me, I have 6 this year alone. It's the time in your life to be prepared to give toasts and speeches.
(Also incredibly important to know how to: Recycle a Bridesmaids Dress, Do the Cupid Shuffle, Find Cool Cheap Gifts on Etsy, Find a Way to get Airline Miles, Talk to Elder Relatives, and Make Friends with the Bartender & Person in charge of Cake)

15.
How to Change a Tire
Take it to Pep Boys

16. How to Do Your Taxes
Take them to H&R Block

17. How to Jump Start a Car

Or at least always have jumper cables in your trunk and know how to ask for help.

18. How to Fight Right
Relationships of every kind have ups and downs, and it's important to know how to fight with your significant other/Friend/Parents/Landlord/Barista while remaining constructive and not hurtful.
(To Max at Starbucks, if you're reading this, I'm sorry.)

19.
How to tip 20%
I've said it before and I'll say it again - if you can't afford to tip 20%, you can't afford to go out.
Period.
Be kind to your server/bartender/hairstylist/sherpa while also improving your karma, and tip the appropriate amount.

20. How to Treat a Hangover
1) One Part Gatorade, Two Parts Water.
2) 3 IB Profen.
3) Repeat Step 1.
4) French Fries.
5) Pint of Beer.
6) Repeat Step 5.
7) Repeat Step 6.
8) Repeat Step 7.
9) Do all over again the next day.

21. How to Have your Fridge Properly Stocked

Milk and Eggs are great and all, but it's important to know how to have a fridge stocked  correctly.
That way there's always something in case of emergency (frozen pizza), company (a bottle of bubbles), cravings (sharp cheddar), mornings (half & half), hydration (Brita pitcher), and necessity (beer).

22.
Make a Craigslist Deal
Meet in a public place, know the appropriate price of what you're buying/selling, know how to haggle, use a bunch of keywords in your post, Avoid creepers.

23. How Do something out of your comfort zone

Whether it's bunjee jumping or wearing shorts, we all need to be forever challenging ourselves.

24. Feel Comfortable Asking for What you Want & Deserve (In all areas)

From the board room to the bed room, if you don't ask, the answer is no.

25.
When and How to Write a Thank You Note
The art of the Thank You note is rapidly fading away in our society, and it's an invaluable skill to have and implement.

26. How to Take Care of your Skin

1. Moisturize
2. Wash Face
3. Moisturize some more

27.
How to Make Lemonade
Metaphorical lemonade, that is.
By 30 we should be able to find the silver linings, see the glass half full, and, in general, suck it up and make the best of things.

28.
Start a Roth IRA

29. Know what a Roth IRA is

30. And When All Else Fails - Just Ask WWOD

What Would Oprah Do?

PS - I'd like to personally thank WikiHow for helping get me through this post and a lot of life in general.

Give A Little Love

Ok Guys, just a little over a week left until Christmas, but this is my favorite guide yet!
At the beginning of this month I shared with you a series of Holiday Gift Guides for all the special people in your life! Here's One, Two and Three
And while I love spoiling people rotten and finding the perfect present for everyone in my life, it's also important around this time of year to think about those less fortunate than we are.
As Charles Dickens says in A Christmas Carol (and I paraphrase) "Christmas is the one time of year when men and women freely open up their closed up hearts and do awesome things for other people."
So, in the spirit of Christmas, Here is a gift guide to help you think about different ways to give presents while also helping mankind.
(Some of these are pretty groovy - Literally 10 have made my giving-list!)

WAYS TO GIFT

1. TOMS
Want to give an actual gift but still do some good? You can never go wrong with TOMS, awesome shoes that give a pair to someone in need for every pair you purchase. With tons of colors, prints and styles, there's something for everyone on your list (and they now make sunglasses too!)

Founded by super hunk (and super human) Hugh Jackman, Laughing Man sells coffee, tea, chocolate and accessories to help entrepreneurs around the world. All of the revenue goes toward entrepreneurial education and community development. Yum yum yum. (I'm talking about the coffee AND Hugh.)

Give a family the gift of changing their lives. This charity group works towards ending hunger and poverty all over the world. Give a donation in a loved one's name, and you'll learn exactly where your money went - financing the purchase of a cow to change the finances of a family, or to a harvest basket to feed a family of four. There are gifts to promote women's empowerment, help impoverished people build their own businesses, support sustainable farming and more.

Get everything from tote and messenger bags to jewelry to shoes & apparel and more from this non-profit group working to bring a permanent end to the Lord's Resistance Army and Joseph Kony in Africa. The organization employs victims of war and mothers affected by the LRA to create items for its Mend line of bags and totes, providing them with an ethical workplace, education and counseling.
Each Tote bag in this year's collection has the name of the woman who made it sewn inside.

This amazing (delicious) lotion by Lush made with Fair Trade organic cocoa butter is good for the skin and the soul. Minus the taxes, 100% of the proceeds from this product go to a variety of over 350 charity organizations around the world that support environmental conservation, animal welfare and human rights!

6. FlameStower
Give this gift to the nature-lover in your life! This amazing new invention (created by my good friend's brother!!) is a portable USB charger that sources energy from an open flame! No matter where you go, or what time of day it is, you can remain connected while still staying off the grid. And the bonus is that this group is working with companies in Africa and India to supply families with power on their devices even when there is no electricity. (Watch the video of how it works! It's crazy-cool!)

7. LSTN Reclaimed Wood Headphones
Not only are these headphones made from reclaimed wood, BUT proceeds go to the Starky Hearing Foundation which helps others hear music for the first time!

8. 31 Bits Jewelry
This Company, founded by 5 young women, aims to use fashion and design to empower people to rise above poverty. They work with beneficiaries in Uganda to create fashionable, quality products, and through this they earn an income enabling them to provide for their families. They also care for them holistically through counseling, health education, finance training, and business mentorships.  Everything they do is funded through product sales, so  every time you make a 31 bits purchase, you have a direct impact on women’s lives in Uganda.

9. Denik Notebooks
This company produces notebooks with artwork on the cover from artists of every kind all over the world. From High School Students to Professionals, Sketches to Photography, there are a ton of different kind of covers! AND 1$ from every (12$) notebook goes towards building schools through the Mali Rising and 5% of the sale goes directly to the artist.

This awesome company improves your water drinking experience with new water bottle technology AND what they do for the world. The purchase of a Miir Water Bottle provides one person in the developing world with clean drinking water for one YEAR!

11. ONEHOPE Reserve Blanc de Blancs
Like the idea of helping provide water for those who need it, but want something more festive than a water bottle? Pop the bubbles with this Sonoma Coast Reserve. HALF the profits of this sparkling wine go to help provide clean water where it's needed!

12. A Giving Key Necklace
The Giving Key group works to employ those transitioning out of homelessness to make jewelry out of repurposed keys that get sold and shared around the world. Each key is unique and carries a message like HOPE, STRENGTH, DREAM or COURAGE. When the wearer of the key encounters someone else who needs the message on the key, they give it away and pay it forward. Neat, huh?

13. Silver Lake Candle
This Fair Trade Candle is made by Raven + Lily, a company that currently helps employ marginalized women in Ethiopia, India, Cambodia and the US at fair trade wages to give them access to a safe job, sustainable income, healthcare, education, and a chance to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and families. Every product from Raven + Lily is handmade, fair trade and eco-friendly. The USA Collection currently features hand-poured soy candles, infused with incredible scents of the woodsy outdoors or tropical fruits, empowering formerly homeless women in Los Angeles.

14. West Elm Mugs
These fun designed mugs each correspond with a different charity organization including St. Jude, Teach for America, Oceana, Doctors Without Borders, and many more. Pick out your favorite mug for your favorite charity, and West Elm will donate 50% of the purchase price! Sip your coffee knowing you did something good.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP:
Done with your shopping but still want to contribute to those in need? Here's some ideas of specific ways you can help make the world a better place.

Glamour's 31 Days of Giving
Every year, Glamour magazine does this special that I LOVE! 31 different ways to fill your holiday season with giving. Check it out and look into the loads of different ways they offer to help!

Donate to Umoja Women's Village
From their site: "Umoja is a women-only village, founded with the mission to improve the livelihood of its members and the Samburu community through education and poverty alleviation." Help women in this village overcome obstacles and lead to a better life. A $10 donation funds a woman’s visit to the medical clinic, while $60 fills up the water tank in the village!

Toys for Tots
Help a child believe in the magic of Christmas by giving them a christmas present. The goal of Toys for Tots is to provide less fortunate children with Christmas presents. By collecting, wrapping and distributing gifts to children in need, TFT tries to play an active role in "our nation's most valuable resource: our children" and give them a message of hope that will "assist them in becoming responsible, productive, patriotic citizens."

Wounded Warrior Project
The WWP is a program that hopes to aid and empower wounded service members. By making a donation, you help the group provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members while raising awareness end enlist the public's aid for these needs. Their mission is to "foster the most successful, well-adjusted generation of wounded service members in our nation's history."

American Red Cross
The American Red Cross is overflowing with ways to donate to help people. 25$ can provide TWENTY-FIVE kids across the world a vaccination. 15$ can provide an entire day's worth of emergency shelter for a disaster victim. Look at their Gift Guide to give the gift of aid as well. (And remember, they always need Blood Donations! - I'm looking at you, O Negatives!)

Family-To-Family
Family to Family is a non-profit national hunger and poverty relief organization that helps some of our country's poorest areas. They are "dedicated to connecting, one-to-one, families with enough to share to impoverished American families with profoundly less." Some sponsors take on the responsibility of weekly shopping trips, while others opt for food drives or monthly donations. They also have programs devoted to mentorship and literacy!

OTHER SOURCES:
  • Always think about local Food Banks and Toy Drives near you! Food and toys are always incredibly important around the holidays!
  • Need a little more guidance? Charity Navigator helps you figure out the way to donate and help out that works best for you. Here is their Holiday Giving Guide
